Seventeen third- through sixth-grade Old Kings Elementary School students were treated to a ride in a stretch hummer and lunch at Sakura Japanese Steak House Thursday, May 14, in recognition of going above and beyond with reading this school year. Students being recognized read and passed tests for all 15 books on the Sunshine State Readers list. The reward program was implemented by the Old Kings media specialist Kim Week, four years ago as an incentive for students. They have always got to pick where they will go out to eat, but this was the largest group, the first time third-graders made the cut, and the first time there was a limo ride.
The third- through fifth-graders share the same reading list, so it is more difficult for the younger students to get through the whole list. This year, four third-graders accomplished this.
“It was his attitude; he wanted to be one of the first third-graders to do it,” said Heather Peugh, mother of Greyson Peugh, who read all 15 books. She came to see him get in the limo. “He made a schedule and powered through it. I love it. For him, knowing that he was going to have this special day was an exciting goal for him to reach.”
Other students who competed the list are Gavin Winkler, Mervyn Gong, Josh Gilliam, Glynnis Gong, Laurissa Stevens, Oslyn Bryant, Juse Asevedo, Ashie Husk, Ashley Andrews, Mila Racco-Griffin, Savannah Fletcher, Maya Akialis, Savanna DaCosta, Austin Weeks, Tristan Skinner and Brendon Wang.
