The Flagler County Board of County Commissioners accepted on March 21 a 911 state grant application in the amount of $110,000 for geographic information system data, to improve the process of locating 911 callers.

At the Aug. 1 regular meeting, the board agreed to internalize project work, rather than farm it out to an outside consultant. Jay Gardner, the Flagler County property appraiser, was hired for the job.

Initially, the county received a bid for “one small section of the work,” County Administrator Craig Coffey said, which came in at $175,000. Gardner will do the whole project for $155,000.

“He’s wanting to help the county,” Coffey said.

Currently, emergency workers receive general area ranges from callers, not exact address locations. The next generation system will pinpoint locations, for faster and more effective response times.

Gardner will lead design and implementation of the project. The remaining funds are available from state 911 board-allocated operating funds for mapping projects.
