Rick Scott’s request has been answered.
Only hours after Florida’s governor requested a major disaster declaration, President Donald Trump approved the declaration at about. 4:10 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 10, according to a release from the governor’s office.
The declaration allows federal funding to flow directly to Floridians impacted by Hurricane Irma. Funding will be used to reimburse local communities and the state government in their aid in response and recovery from the storm.
As Irma moves through Florida, Scott will work with Trump and FEMA to approve more funding to additional communities throughout the state. In addition, the federal reimbursement percentage may increase as damage assessments are reported.
Irma already made landfall in the lower Florida Keys Sunday morning.
“It’s clear that the entire country is standing with Florida as Hurricane Irma batters our state right now,” Scott said in a release. “I have heard from people all across the world that want to help and support Florida. It’s encouraging, and on behalf of all Floridians: We appreciate the support and constant collaboration.”
