Bunnell Chamber of Commerce President Michael Barr announced to the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners June 4 that May’s fourth-annual Potato Festival was the city’s best yet.
“It went off fantastically,” Barr said, citing the near-5,000 people who showed to this year’s event. “If we continue this progress and success, (the Potato Fest) will become an integral part of our community.”
About 400 pounds of French fries were made at the event, which Barr called “a celebration of Flagler’s heritage.” And all of the proceeds collected, he added, have been put in a pot of money to be used for Bunnell’s new Business Improvement Program.
With close to $8,000 currently available in the account, the program will donate grants to local businesses for landscaping, signage and other aesthetic improvements.
Companies do not need to be chamber members to win, and similar programs are being established in Flagler Beach and Palm Coast, as well, Barr added.
“I’m overwhelmed when I think about how generous the community was with this event — it means there’s a lot of support for our programs here,” Barr said. “This was setting the example that if all the pieces and parts of our community come together, we can demonstrate success.”
