The Pirates tied for 37th at the Class 2A state meet.

The Matanzas track-and-field team finished its season April 30 at the Class 2A state meet, in Winter Park, finishing tied for 37th after scoring five team points.

“I’m very proud of our athletes for all of their hard work and dedication to this team,” Wolfe said. “Just making it to the state championship is an accomplishment. We had a great group of athletes and the season as a whole was definitely a success.”

The Pirates had six individual state qualifiers as well as two relay teams.

David Drumm was the team’s best finisher, placing sixth in the 3,200 meters, finishing in 9 minutes, 47 seconds. Drumm’s time was a personal record and school record.

The only other podium finish for the Pirates was the 4x400 team, which finished in seventh place in 3:24.62. The team features Isaiah Haines, Justin Watts, Steven Van Buren and Nikko Bembry.

“This was easily the most exciting race for us,” Wolfe said of his 4x400 relay.

Wolfe said the 4x400 finish was a school record, adding that the group of four shaved nearly six seconds of their relay time in two weeks.

The 4x800 meter relay team, which features Watts, Bembry, Cameron Allen and Chris Bailey, finished in 14th place with a time of 8:20.

“Each leg was very aggressive from the outset and tried to give themselves a chance to make the podium,” Wolfe said. “They definitely left everything out on the track.”

Watts, who competed in the 4x800 relay, the 4x400 relay and the 400-meter dash, had the biggest day of everyone, Wolfe said.

Watts finished the 400 meters in a school record time of 49.96 seconds.

Sophomore Hannah Loder didn’t finish in the 1,600 meters, but finished ninth in the 3,200 meters with a time of 11:45.

Darren Richardson tied for ninth in the high jump after clearing 6 feet, 2 inches. Wolfe said Richardson had great success in his first year competing in the high jump.

Perez Pierre finished 13th in the prelims for the 110-meter hurdles.

Levi Rosa, who finished third in the region in the pole vault, didn’t qualify for the finals at the state meet.
