Members of the writing community and the art community came together Friday night to a unique event that combined the written and spoken word with paint on canvas.

Pen Meets Brush, presented by Salvo Art and The Inspired Mic, featured the prose of 10 writers read aloud while J.J. Graham painted his interpretations, combining the stories into one finished painting. Presenters for the evening included Becky Pourchot, Sh’mal Ellenberg, Renny Roker, Dima Zales, Angelica Timothy, Tim Baker, Richard Meo, Anna Zaired, Kevin Cox and Amy Alysia.

“I am thinking this is the coolest thing,” Baker said after three presenters has gone, adding that he was going to have read with one eye and watch Graham paint with the other.

The cross pollination of artistic genres, aimed to bring the arts community together and offer a new perspective.

“I think it’s amazing; bringing the different art forms together, it really touches the soul,” said Marissa Cevert, who attended the event while vising from Colorado.

The final painting was sold during a silent auction. Proceeds from the sale will go to buying materials to create an art installation with the students at Salvo Art’s summer art camp.
