Press release by Cindi Lane, the city of Palm Coast communications and marketing manager

Diabetes is a serious disease afflicting some 30 million people in the United States, with one in four people not knowing they have it. The number of people with diabetes worldwide has nearly quadrupled since 1980.

To raise awareness of the symptoms and risk factors for the disease, and how to manage the disease, Florida Hospital Flagler, The DiaBEATes Alliance and Palm Coast Parks and Recreation are hosting a World Diabetes Day event from 8:30-11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, at the Palm Coast Community Center, 305 Palm Coast Pkwy. NE.

The event will start with a flag-raising and welcome from Palm Coast Mayor Milissa Holland and DiaBEATes Alliance representative Laura Gilvary at 8:30 a.m. The World Diabetes Walk will follow; this is an optional 1.5-mile walk to Linear Park and back led by MPower Fitness.

Wellness screenings provided by Florida Hospital Flagler, and facilitated by the Lions Club, will begin at 9 a.m., and the hospital’s diabetes educator Dr. Angela Fals will make a presentation at 10 a.m. Diabetic-friendly refreshments will be provided by Oceanside Bar and Grill, and several vendors will distribute information.
