The Palm Coast United Methodist Church held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 20 to mark the start of construction of its new church campus. Mayor David Alfin attended the event.
The new, 25,495-square-foot campus will be on the southeast corner of Belle Terre Parkway and Matanzas Woods Parkway, according to a news release from the church.
The congregation expects to celebrate Christmas 2023 in the new location. Meanwhile, another local church is under contract to buy the Palm Coast United Methodist Church’s current campus at 5200 Belle Terre Parkway.
Construction of the new church was initially expected to last a year, but that timeline has been extended to 16-18 months because of supply shortages and skilled labor shortages, according to the news release.
The new church building will follow a community center model, serving multiple functions seven days a week, with a focus on attracting children, youth and younger families.
The new campus’ 10-acre parcel is the remainder of what had been 22 acres of land that the church bought below market value from ITT in 1999.
The church bought the ITT land in order to build a new campus, and the church’s membership has voted three times since 1999 in favor of building a northern church campus, according to the news release.
The church sold 2 acres for the development of a Dollar General convenience store in 2019, and sold 8 acres to Flagler Health+, a St. Augustine-based health care provider that is developing Flagler Health+ Village, an indoor-outdoor medical – well-being center.
