From an unemployment rate of 16% in January, then one of 14.5% in March, Palm Coast’s unemployment rate fell once again, to 13.8%, in April of 2011. It remains the state high.
According to labor market statistics recorded by the Center for Business Excellence, education and health services were the only Palm Coast job sectors to record growth from April 2010 to April 2011.
Nonagricultural employment decreased by 3.2% (-600 jobs) over the year in the region. Statewide, employment increased in that sector by 0.6% over the same time period.
Government (-400 jobs) — including mining, logging and construction, information and financial activities (-100 jobs each) — lost jobs over the year in the region, as well.
Education and health services (+100 jobs, or +4.2% each) was the only major sector that showed an increase in the year, growing faster in the Palm Coast metro area than in the state.
Manufacturing, trade, transportation and utilities, professional and business services, leisure and hospitality remained unchanged.
The unemployment rate in the CBE combined region of Flagler and Volusia Counties was 11% in April — 0.7 percentage points lower than the region’s year-ago rate.
Flagler County recorded a rate of 13.8%. Volusia was 10.6%.
The recorded state unemployment rate was 0.6 percentage points lower than the Flagler/Volusia region, at 10.4%.
