Palm Coast’s very own Leah Lester and cat Buddy have been chosen out of thousands of video submissions as finalists for “The Friskies” 2014. “The Friskies” is the renowned awards for the best internet cat videos of the year. Now, with the public’s vote, Buddy has the chance to reach cat stardom!
In the playful video, it is clear Buddy is quite the skeptic. What is this strange object doing on my floor?
Now through Sept. 8, Palm Coast residents can vote for their hometown cat in the video “Cat vs. Flip-Flop” and help donate food to shelter cats in need at the same time. To view the finalists’ videos and cast your vote, visit thefriskies.com.

Happy 100th birthday!
Alva Edison Whitney Jr., of Palm Coast, turned 100 years old Aug. 8. Born in 1914, in Paterson, New Jersey, he spent his formative years in Nutley, New Jersey, graduating from Nutley High School in 1931.
He received a B.S. in chemical engineering from Newark College of Engineering (now New Jersey Institute of Technology) in 1935. From 1941 to 1945, he was deferred from military service in the war effort, but worked on coated fabric materials for DuPont that included work on navy bedding bag material and double coated life preserver jackets. Working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company in their Chemical Division for 34 years, he retired in 1984. He was instrumental in the formation of the Palisades, New Jersey Section of the Society of Plastics Engineers in 1964 and served as its first president. They are currently celebrating their 50th anniversary.
He moved to Palm Coast in 1998. Continuing a lifelong interest in stamps, he is an active member in the Palm Coast Stamp Club. He has a son, two daughters, and two grandsons. His sister, Marion Whitney Kearns, will be celebrating her 105th birthday in September.
