Herb Rogge, a retired lieutenant of 38 years, was recently honored with a retirement ID and badge for his years of service to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

Born in New Jersey, Rogge worked for the New Milford Police Department for 21 years before retiring in 1974.

One of his assignments was analyzing accident scenes.

“I got a kick out of investigating and reconstructing the accidents,” Rogge said.

He also worked on an ambulance crew for 13 years, in New Jersey.

“I was so heartbroken I had to retire — I was in tears,” Rogge said, remembering the ceremony honoring him in New Jersey.

Following that, Rogge lived in Flagler County, and in 1978, he stopped at an accident scene to assist a deputy. After helping the deputy, he was asked if he was interested in becoming a part of the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office and again serving as an active deputy.

He pursued the opportunity. “I was handed a badge and a gun,” Rogge said. And the rest is history. He served as a reserve deputy and bailiff for 17 years before retiring again, in 1996.

Rogge’s favorite aspect of his years of service was the camaraderie with fellow workers.

“It was such a pleasure to work with them,” Rogge said. “They were all wonderful fellows.”

Rogge has two daughters, a son and many grandchildren. He said the best day of his life was the day he was married. Rogge served with the U.S. Army for two years, as well as the Coast Guard.

Rogge is active in the community, having given 11,000 hours to the Volunteer Auxiliary at Florida Hospital Flagler during the past 30 years.

“I am no hero,” Rogge says. “They say the only heroes are the ones in the cemetery.”
