Ormond Beach man given life sentence for DUI crash that killed two people
William Schwarz — the 54-year-old Ormond Beach man who drove into oncoming traffic on State Road A1A in Flagler County, killing an elderly couple — was sentenced to life in prison, according to a release by the Office of the State Attorney.
In March 2016, Schwarz, who had three prior DUI convictions, swerved into oncoming traffic on State Road A1A from St. Augustine to pass another car and slammed into a vehicle carrying Carl William Boos and Kathleen Boos, who were both killed.
Witnesses in the hearing described the driving as “the worst they have ever seen,” according to the release.
State attorney R.J. Larizza said that while life sentences for DUI manslaughter are rare, the defendant’s three prior DUI’s combined with other criminal charges “illustrated his total disdain for the dangers of drinking and driving.”
He added: “It is our hope that the victims’ family find some measure of peace in the fact that this defendant was held accountable for his deadly decision to drink and drive.”
