Jan Obendorfer will be the artist of the month featured at the Gallery of Local Art, 6-9 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7.

Obendorfer grew up in Daytona Beach, two blocks from the beach and her love for art first became apparent under the instruction of Nina Masters at Seabreeze High School, and continued to grow while taking classes at Daytona State College, which was DBJC at that time.

Before graduating from college, Eastern airlines offered Obendorfer a career as a flight attendant and for 15 years she traveled around the world. While living and working in several areas of the eastern part of the United States, Obendorfer’s art had to take the back seat to an even greater adventure, raising a family.

Obendorfer’s three grown children are now living in three different states pursuing their own adventurous lives.

Obendorfer currently takes classes at the Art League of Daytona, which for her, has come full circle. She remembers being nine or 10 years old and carrying a cigar box full of watercolors to a summer art camp held at the Art League of Daytona.

Since rekindling her interest in art in 2006, Obendorfer has had several teachers that have guided her talent in acrylics as well as oil painting. She feels she will always be learning new techniques, applications and styles; right now Obendorfer enjoys oil classes and is growing to love the smell of turpentine.
