About 80 young dancers have lost a place to practice their art — at least for now.

The North East Florida Dance Academy, run through Flagler County’s Adult and Community Education Program, has shut its doors while the district searches for an instructor to replace outgoing dance teacher Nicole Hodges, who left after the district eliminated her full-time position and replaced it with an as-needed one that pays $14 an hour.

“We did have a job posting, so we’ll be evaluating the applicants,” Adult and Community Education Director Virginia Giaramita said. “We’ll just have to see what happens. As of right now, we don’t have the program up and running.”

Giaramita prepared a proposal for a new “dance facilitator” position that would pay more, $16.64-$18.37 per hour, but the Flagler School District School Board did not approve it during a meeting Nov. 5.

The North East Florida Dance Academy is run much like a private dance studio, according to Giaramita’s proposal, and generated $17,377 in profit in the 2012-2013 fiscal year.
