The Flagler Beach Police Department has partnered with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate/Synergy and Home Bridge Financial Services to offer a free document shredding service Saturday, Jan. 7.

The “Shred the Word” event, designed to help prevent identity theft, will be held 9-11 a.m. in the Publix Plaza at the northwest corner of State Road 100 and Roberts Road in Flagler Beach, according to a Flagler Beach Police Department news release.

Members of the public can bring documents that contain personal information — such as financial documents, receipts, and bank statements, on paper or computer disc — and watch as the documents are shredded for free with a mobile shredding machine secured by Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate/Synergy and Home Bridge Financial Services.

“Identity theft is a crime that has evolved with the increase in technology," Flagler Beach Police Chief Matt Doughney said. "Those who have been victimized have had to endure major hardships to recover their identity and their credit. This event is designed for people to dispose of personal information locally, securely, and at no cost. By partnering with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate/Synergy and Home Bridge Financial Services, the Police Department can provide a quality event for free. This initiative is a collaboration designed to help prevent identity theft in our community.”
