+ Smoke causes spike in Flagler Hospital ER visits
Yara Gocking, emergency department manager at Florida Hospital Flagler, reports a 30% to 40% increase in asthma or respiratory-related problems at the hospital, typically a more prevalent winter concern.

Gocking advised that if residents are concerned about their health because of the smoke, they should contact their doctors. In case of emergency, call 911.

+ Jimmie Johnson picks Ed. Foundation; Brose moving on
Superstar racecar driver Jimmie Johnson selects 12 nonprofits per year and donates $10,000 to each, as well as featuring the logos on his helmet as part of his foundation’s Helmet of Hope campaign. Of 2,000 nominees, Flagler County Education Foundation was chosen, according to the foundation’s executive director, Nicole Brose.

In an unrelated item, Brose, who has been in her position for three years, has resigned as of June 30, to become the program and branch specialist for CIC Planning Group Inc., a boutique consulting firm in Gainesville.

A search committee is currently reviewing more than 70 applications to be her replacement. Brose will continue to live in Flagler County and will work with and train her replacement.

+ Palm Coast teens charged for break-in, iPod theft
Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies, on June 9, charged three Palm Coast teens with burglary of a vehicle, grand theft and dealing in stolen property.

Deputies charged Joshua Clark, 16, F-section; Mark Skaggs Jr., 17, L-section; and Joseph Salce, 17, B-section, in connection with the May 26 break-in of a vehicle on Fernon Lane. Deputies said a black iPod was stolen from the parked vehicle.

According to deputies, two of the teens entered the vehicle while a third teen stood as lookout. The three then took the iPod to another teen’s house, where Clark traded the iPod away to a unknowing fourth party.
The iPod was eventually put up for sale on Craigslist, where the victim saw it and contacted law enforcement about his vehicle being burglarized.

Clark and Skaggs were charged for grand theft, burglary of a conveyance and dealing in stolen property. Salce was charged with grand theft and burglary of a conveyance.

All three were released to their parents. The iPod was returned to the victim.

+ Palm Coast Arbor Day event collects 1,820 pounds of food
Successful Palm Coast Arbor Day donation drives at a May 7 event yielded $385 for the Flagler Youth Center from the community sale of canned goods.

Also, 1,820 pounds of food were collected for local food banks, and 700 trees were donated to residents to beautify the community.
