+ Report: Driver rear-ends motorcycle deputy
A Flagler County Sheriff’s Office motorcycle deputy was rear-ended around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 6, while he was assisting with another traffic stop, according to state troopers.

William Lowe, 24, was on scene assisting another deputy when a passenger car failed to observe a traffic stop and ran into the back of Lowe, according to Lt. Bill Leeper, of the Florida Highway Patrol. 

The car, a 1998 Nissan four-door, was driven by Margie Hitas, 36, of Palm Coast, according to Leeper.

Lowe was transported to Florida Hospital Flagler with minor injuries. Hitas also sustained minor injuries but was not transported.

+ Waste Pro pickup hits, kills 76-year-old man on scooter
A 76-year-old Daytona Beach man was killed while riding a scooter on U.S. 1, in Flagler County, after a Palm Coast Waste Pro pickup truck collided with the scooter.

The man driving the scooter, a 2006 Suzuki Burgman, was traveling northbound on State Road 5 in the outside lane around 3:16 p.m. Monday, April 11, the report states. The man’s name is being withheld pending notification of next-of-kin.

The driver of the 2007 Chevrolet 2500 Waste Pro maintenance pickup truck crossed the lanes to head southbound. While he attempted the cross over the northbound lanes, the scooter ran into the driver’s side of the pickup truck.

The man on the scooter was ejected killed, according to the report from the Florida Highway Patrol.

+ Stun gun employed several times before arrest
Elmer L. DeGrant, 63, of Foxhall Lane, was jailed April 10, on three charges, including battery on a law-enforcement officer.

According to a report from the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office, deputies arrived at the 300 block of Pine Street, Bunnell, and discovered a crowd of 50 to 100 people. A deputy attempted to handcuff a woman; her boyfriend, DeGrant, told the deputy to stop.

The deputy knocked his hand away and ordered him to back up. When DeGrant did not comply, the deputy used a stun gun on him.

The man continued to resist despite the stun and was stunned several more times in the shoulder before he was placed in handcuffs. DeGrant was seen by paramedics and transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility.

Flagler County, not the Flagler County Health Department, was rated as 17 out of 67 in Florida.
