+ Netts to Mica: Keep FAA center in Palm Coast
Palm Coast Mayor Jon Netts has reached out to U.S. Congressman John Mica in an attempt to keep the Federal Aviation Administration’s Center for Executive Leadership Training facility, in Palm Coast.

It has been rumored for months that the FAA is considering relocation of its facility. According to Netts’ letter, the lease between the FAA and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University is about to expire, and the FAA is seeking proposals for its next location. According to ERAU representatives, the current bid proposals specify that a major international airport must be within 25 miles of the new location.

Netts states in the letter: “While the city of Palm Coast has three major airports within about an hour drive time, our city does not meet the current bid specification. This is both an unfair and an unreasonable bid specification.”

Netts states the FAA center is “a valuable asset to our community,” adding: “As you know, our current unemployment is one of the highest in the state of Florida and losing the training center could only have a further negative impact on our local economy.”

+ Property appraiser warns of scam
According to Flagler County Property Appraiser James E. Gardner Jr., a company is offering to provide an official copy of a property owner’s deed for a fee. This is a scam; the copy and fee are unnecessary.

A local property owner received a mail solicitation indicating that an official copy of the deed would be provided for a fee of $87. This service was to be provided by the State Record Retrieval Board.

A release from Gardner’s office said: “Don’t let the official sounding name fool you. Citizens should always be skeptical when contacted by out-of-area companies offering services for a fee and should always check with their local governmental agencies.”

Unofficial copies of deeds are available for free on the property appraiser’s website at www.flaglerpa.com. An official copy may be obtained from the clerk of court for a nominal fee.

+ Holland Park renovations to begin
Renovations at the Holland Park Dog Park are scheduled to begin Monday, March 7.

During that week, owners will see the following upgrades:
— Addition of a new double-gated entrance at the lower end of the park
— Addition of concrete walkways from the new parking area to the new entrance and from the new entrance to the gazebo in the park
— Addition of concrete pads around the water stations and water fountain
— Annexation of handicapped parking at the new entrance.
— Reconfiguration of the current park entrance

The park will be closed during the remodeling process and, weather permitting, the Holland Park Dog Park located, at 18 Florida Park Drive, will reopen in one week.

+ County joins lawsuit against online bookings
Flagler County has joined with several other Florida counties in a lawsuit against online booking agencies.
Companies such as Orbitz, Trevelocity, Expedia, Priceline and others don’t charge the 4% sales tax on short-term rentals, therefore the counties are losing out on the 4% bed tax, according to Carl Laundrie, spokesman for the county.

Peggy Heiser, vice president of tourism development for the Flagler County Chamber of Commerce & Affiliates, said the money the county is trying to recover will be used to help market the county.
