+ Unoccupied van leads to marijuana bust
An unoccupied van left with the engine running the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 15, resulted in Flagler County Sheriff’s deputies interrupting a sophisticated marijuana growing operation in Palm Coast, officials said Feb. 16.

Around 9:12 a.m., Deputy Daniel Weaver was on patrol when he observed an unoccupied van parked with the engine running at 59 Pine Grove Drive. The deputy stopped, observed no one in or around the van and shut it off, taking the keys.

A man then stepped out of the house, and Weaver met with him to discuss the dangers of leaving an unattended vehicle running. During the discussion, Weaver detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the man. After determining there was a second male in the house and smelling a strong odor of marijuana from the house, Weaver requested the second man to step outside.

The Sheriff’s Narcotics Enforcement Team obtained a search warrant and found about 106 marijuana plants in various stages of growth inside an elaborate lighting and watering system. The watering system recycled water from the pool to the inside of the house that contained a climate control system.

Deputies arrested the occupants of the home, Angel Cardenas, 35, and Christian Navarro, 19. Both were charged with cultivation of marijuana and transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility. The two men later posted $10,000 bond and were released Feb. 15, according to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office.

“This was a large ... operation, and we are fortunate to have identified and dismantled it before these drugs made it to the streets,” Flagler County Sheriff Donald Fleming said.

+ Palm Coast teens suspected in multiple burglaries
The burglary spree of two Palm Coast teenagers ended Feb. 15, when deputies charged both with three counts of burglary of a vehicle following an investigation into a residential burglary the afternoon of Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Seife Holley, 17, of 22 Hammock Beach Parkway, and Derrius Bauer, 16, of 57A Louisiana Drive, were both charged in connection with the burglary of a vehicle on Lewis Drive. Deputies have charged the two with two other vehicle burglaries that occurred Feb. 14, on Louisiana Drive and Lewis Drive.

The arrests came after deputies responded to a report of a burglary in progress in the area of 48 Louisiana Drive. A resident of the home was visiting a neighbor when both saw Holley running from the direction of the victim’s home. The victim told deputies he ran to his house to find a back door open and a laptop, two guitars and a camera missing.

Deputies located Holley at the home of Bauer. Deputies said they discovered the stolen items in a backpack behind Bauer’s home. Deputies also recovered items stolen during the car burglaries Feb. 14, in Bauer’s bedroom. Holley was additionally charged with the residential burglary.

Both teens admitted to having burglarized several unlocked vehicles Feb. 14. The two are also charged with one count each of petit theft.

Holly was charged with three felony counts of grand theft, three felony counts of burglary of a vehicle, one felony count of residential burglary, one count criminal mischief and one count petit theft.

Bauer was charged with two felony counts of grand theft, three felony counts of burglary of a vehicle, one count of criminal mischief, and one count petit theft.

The teenagers were transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility. Holley was transported to the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center. Bauer was released to his guardian.

“These teenagers should have been … on the streets,” said Sheriff Donald Fleming. “We are fortunate to have ended their crime spree. Their neighborhood has been negatively impacted by the actions of these two.”
