Flagler County deputies spent the Thanksgiving weekend responding to service calls, including at least 14 that involved domestic disturbances, according to a release by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office. Six arrests were made in domestic violence cases from Wednesday, Nov. 21, to Sunday, Nov. 25.

Among those was the arrest of 49-year-old Carmen Velez, who was arrested on Sunday morning after Flagler Sheriff’s Dispatch received a call that Velez was chasing her adult son around the house with two large knives. The son was able to lock Velez out of the house until law enforcement arrived. She remains in jail with no bond.

Deputies responded to the residence at Palmwood Drive and noted that Velez smelled of alcohol and had glassy, bloodshot eyes.

The victim told deputies that he came home from his daughter's cheer competition on the evening of Nov. 24 to find Velez intoxicated. When the victim awoke the next morning, Velez was still intoxicated, was drinking a vodka cocktail and had recently smoked marijuana.

Velez then reportedly accused her son of going through her purse and taking items. The victim informed deputies that Velez continued to escalate the situation and approached him with her hands raised as if she were about to strike him. The victim pushed his mother away, at which time Velez ran into the kitchen, grabbed two knives and chased him around the house.

She was taken to the Flagler County Jail and was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.
