The Matanzas Pirates football team had plenty of time to reflect on the tough district loss Sept. 23, against Pedro Menendez, but this week, it’s been all about moving on.

Lagocki said it was tough having a week off.

“It was kind of tough coming off that loss and kind of tough not getting ready for someone else right away,” Lagocki said.

But the Pirates can’t have any lingering effects from two weeks ago. Another district foe is coming to town Friday night.

The Pirates did have an extra week to prepare for its second district game of the season, when Ponte Vedra comes to town 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at Pirate Field.

The Pirates (2-2, 0-1) haven’t made any drastic changes during the week off, according to Lagocki.

Ponte Vedra (3-1) defeated FPC, 35-7, last week. Lagocki and his coaching staff had an opportunity to scout what Ponte Vedra does offensively and defensively.

Lagocki said on offense, the Pirates will focus on doing a lot of sight adjustments, meaning changing their plays based on what the Sharks show defensively.

It’s not quite an audible, Lagocki added.

“It’s seeing them lined up a certain way and then just basically checking to a play that’ll take advantage of what they are in,” he said.

Lagocki said the game plan includes trying to spread out Ponte Vedra early by running plays outside the numbers. Once they can spread the field, Lagocki would like to run power football between the tackles with running backs Shawn White and Randall Navanugraha.

Lagocki added: “But we have to have some success early using our speed and throwing the ball outside and spread them out. That that should open up the lanes so we can run the ball at them.”
