The Flagler County School Board has selected 15 community members to form a committee to search for a superintendent to replace Janet Valentine, who plans to retire at the end of the school year.

“We appreciate the interest from the community and wish that we could select everybody,” School Board Chairman Andy Dance said. “The meetings will be posted, they’ll be free to attend and it will probably be handled like a workshop where guests can come and listen in. It will be up to the chair of that committee as to whether they take community responses.”

The committee will meet several times in December and January to help narrow a list of candidates and present the board with a list of three finalists Jan. 22. The board has drawn up a sample job posting and job description as a template to help the committee evaluate candidates.

The board would like to announce its final choice by Feb. 4, so the incoming superintendent has time to attend a mandatory school superintendent training event Feb. 12-14, in St. Petersburg.

Selectees for the committee include former administrator Myra Middleton-Valentine, African American Mentor Program president John Winston, Flagler County Education Foundation President Joe Rizzo, Palm Coast City Councilman Bill McGuire, Nancy Walsh of Early Learning Coalition of Flagler and Volusia and County Commissioner Barbara Revels.

The group will hold an initial meeting 2-4 p.m. Dec. 10. To go over roles and responsibilities, select a chairperson and review the state’s open records laws.

School Board Superintendent Janet Valentine plans to retire June 30. She is currently out of work due to a stroke she suffered Nov. 20, and recovering in a rehabilitation center in Ormond Beach.
