Sydnee Wong, a student at Matanzas High School who has been writing poetry for seven years, recently had one of her poems, "Midnight Sonata," accepted for publication in a nationwide contest sponsored by justpoetry.org. Only 2% percent of the entries in the contest will be published, and Wong's poem will be among them.
What inspires Wong's poems? "My belief in Jesus, music, and personal testimonies," she said.
Aside from her poetry writing, Wong is also involved in Mu Alpha Theta at school, and plays the piano and the viola. She plans to continue her education after high school and wants to "enter a career path that enables me to help others."
Wong's poem:
Midnight Sonata
'Twas the moon, shining; and the stars so bright.
As thee crept through the depths of the night.
Thou maketh no sound, 'xecpt breath of the lungs,
to the harmony, as the bat slept and sung.
"I'm owned to the night!" thou proclaimed, strong.
Or is he the one rejected, refuted, unbelonged?
For others scorned him; his love cast'd down.
Thee no longer galloped, but instead settled with a frown.
"I deserve affection! I deserve to be loved!" He
shouted as a phantom loomed high above. The
spirit now of him said, "You feel this way, I do too.
I want your vengeance, so do you?"
"We have a deal." He replied; now with a smirk.
With duties to fulfill and the devil's dirty-work.
