April 14 was a day of celebration at the Wadsworth Elementary School's library with the ribbon cutting of a brand-new makerspace bench built by students in the Matanzas High School Construction Technology class.
In January, Wadsworth's media specialist Marilee Palot sent a picture of a typical workbench to MHS teacher Vincent Oliveri asking if his students would be able to build a similar bench which would serve as a work area for various student creative projects. Oliveri and his students visited the school to observe the space and brainstorm with Palot.
The original library makerspace was little more than a table with plastic containers to store the materials. Now, the students have a genuine work bench with shelves, bins for storage, and a corkboard to showcase their work.
On hand to thank Oliveri and his students -- Austin Brown, Michael Brown, Jared Gibbs, Nick Walton, Patrick Tilton and Andrew Willis --for their fine craftsmanship, were Jen Carroll's fourth-grade class, Martin Evan's STEM academy, Principal John Fanelli, and assistant principals Fred Terry and Kara Minn.
