The Matanzas Lady Pirates flag football team made history Friday, March 30, beating crosstown Flagler Palm Coast for the first time. Alyssa Lamb caught the winning touchdown.

With minutes remaining in a scoreless game March 30 between Flagler Palm Coast and Matanzas high schools, Lady Pirates quarterback Hanna Lamphier heaved a ball to wide receiver Alyssa Lamb.

Lamb snagged the ball, turned up the field and ran into the end zone.

That was all she wrote.

The Lady Pirates defeated the Lady Bulldogs, 6-0, in a crosstown flag football showdown.

The win marked the first time Matanzas defeated FPC in school history.

“I’m very proud of my girls,” said Matanzas coach Sarah Ashman. “We have one of the best teams we’ve ever had. They work really well together and it showed.”

Ashman praised the Lady Bulldogs after the game.

“They have a great defense,” she said. “They have a great offense. They’re a really great team to play.”

FPC was missing a few starters, but coach James Gambone made no excuses for his team’s loss.

“It would’ve helped to have them, but the players we had knew how to play, and we just didn’t execute when we needed to,” Gambone said. “Matanzas’ defense was really good. We left a few points on the field, missed a few passes and should’ve scored touchdowns. When you do that, when you play a team with a good defense, bad things can happen.”

Next, FPC (2-2) will play April 9, at Deltona.

Matanzas (2-2) will play in an April 7 tournament, which will include Celebration, Palatka and Warner Christian.
