Ponte Vedra passed, rushed, and punt blocked its way into the end zone five times Friday night, as the Sharks knocked off Matanzas, 35-6, on a windy and rainy night at Pirate Field.

The Matanzas offense struggled to get on its feet for most of the game. Sophomore QB Al’Kwazi Spencer went 13-for-33 passing, along with two interceptions. He did have a 7-yard touchdown pass to running back Randall Navanugraha just one minute into the fourth quarter.

But the Pirates put themselves in a hole early. Matanzas took the opening kickoff, but after the offense stalled on three plays, Ponte Vedra blocked the Pirates’ punt and ran it in for a touchdown. The Sharks were up 7-0 and never looked back.

Despite being on the field for most of the first half, the Matanzas defense held strong against a bruising Ponte Vedra running back in Cole Mazza.

But that all changed in the second half.

Pone Vedra opened the second half with the ball. The Sharks engineered a 13-play, 81-yard scoring drive that took up the first six minutes of the third quarter. The Sharks went ahead 21-0.

Though Matanzas managed to cut the deficit to 21-6, three fourth quarter interceptions stymied any comeback attempt.

Next up: The Pirates (2-3, 0-2) host nondistrict opponent Fernandina Beach 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14, in the homecoming game.
