In just over a year, Mike Mangum has seen his business more than double in revenue, with 60% of his customers coming from referrals.

Mangum Motorsports, at 3240 Steel Rail Drive, west of U.S. 1 in Bunnell, started with Mangum himself as the only auto mechanic. Today, he has three full-time employees, including his brother.

He began with 900 square feet on Nov. 14, 2020. Then he added an 1,100-square-foot bay on the other side of his office, for a total of 2,000.

When Mangum made that move, the owner of the building asked if he’d ever be interested in expanding even more, if the owner added onto the building. Mangum immediately said, “I’m ready.”

And so, permitting began. Mangum paid $16,000 for the coating on the concrete floor, and his auto shop is now in one open building spanning 3,800 square feet, more than four times his original footprint.

His monthly customers have increased from 26 to 63 since December 2020. His monthly sales increased from about $17,000 to $38,000.

Mangum said he is also getting more classic custom work, which is his passion.

“I never, ever thought this is where we’d be in a year,” Mangum said. “It’s great.”
