Paramedics rushed a 78-year-old man to Florida Hospital Flagler May 6 after a family dog attacked, causing severe bleeding and leaving ligaments exposed — injuries so extensive paramedics thought the man might need to be transferred to Halifax Hospital as a trauma patient, according to a Sheriff's Office report.
The man, Cherrytree Court, Palm Coast resident Herbert Kraese, later told a deputy he and his wife had been arguing. It was about 8:30 p.m., and he was doing dishes. She was angry, and threw a mug at him. It didn't hit him. He raised his voice.
Then his 25-year-old daughter's dog, a 5-year-old tan and white boxer/pit bull mix named Biscuit, "nipped" Kraese on the calf, according to the report.
Kraese nudged the dog's head with his leg, and the dog "ripped into Herbert's leg causing extensive injury," according to the report. Kraese fell to the ground, the dogs jaws still latched around his leg, and tried to pry the dog off.
The dog then bit him on the hand, causing "an extensive tear" that exposed ligaments, according to the report.
Rescuers took Kraese to Florida Hospital Flagler by ambulance. At the hospital, he told a deputy what happened. Animal control officers told a deputy that animal control could take the dog the next day.
