A fight that broke out in the Target Shopping Plaza on State Road 100 in Palm Coast resulted in a man getting pistol-whipped and a discharged round, according to a news release by the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office.

No one was shot.

Matthew Bauman told deputies that he was in a fight with Christopher Quijano, 19, in the parking lot in front of the Ross store on the night of Saturday, June 30. Bauman told deputies that he was inside of the clothing store with Quijano and several other people. Quijano and Bauman got into a verbal altercation over Quijano being disrespectful and yelling at his girlfriend, according to the charging affidavit.

Bauman told Quijano that “he needed to watch how he was speaking to his girl,” with Quijano telling him to mind his own business, reportedly.

Bauman approached Quijano a second time after exiting Ross, reigniting the argument.

Bauman told deputies that he made a comment regarding a gun. Bauman said Quijano then pulled a black semiautomatic handgun from his waistband, loaded a round into the chamber and struck Bauman in the right cheek and right ear, causing two large lacerations consistent with a pistol-whipping.

While he was hitting Bauman with the gun, Quijano fired a round, which struck a vehicle in the parking lot, shattering the back window. The bullet lodged in the back of the headrest of the passenger seat.

Quijano fled the scene in a vehicle, and deputies were able to locate him around 10:40 p.m. at 5 Colony Court.

He was arrested and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and discharged of a firearm in public.

He was taken to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility on a $100,000 bond.
