Palm Coast resident Gregory Daniel Fagas, 40, was killed and 27-year-old Palm Coast resident Nacomi Marie Campbell was injured in a motorcycle wreck in the northbound lanes of Belle Terre Parkway across from the entrance to Belle Terre Elementary School the night of July 4.
Fagas died at the scene of the crash, and rescuers took the Campbell to Halifax Hospital in Daytona Beach in critical condition.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers were dispatched to the scene of the crash at about 8:18 p.m. Saturday, July 4 after a 911 call came in at about 8:09 p.m. Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputies and Palm Coast Fire Department rescuers also responded to the crash.
A Florida Highway Patrol traffic homicide investigator at the scene of the crash said that Fagas and Campbell were on the same motorcycle heading north when, "for unknown reasons, the motorcycle drifted to the northeast" and struck the raised curb of the sidewalk.
The motorcycle continued onto the grassy shoulder of the road and struck a school crossing sign, breaking it off at its base, then struck a light pole across from the school, throwing the two riders, and continued down an embankment into a ditch in a wooded area alongside the road. Investigators did not find any helmets at the crash scene.
The northbound lanes of Belle Terre Parkway were blocked off at the intersection with Birds of Paradise Drive as law enforcement officers and first responders handled the crash and began their investigation and a Saxon's towing truck removed the motorcycle. The southbound lanes remained open.
Rescuers and law enforcement officers left the scene and reopened the northbound lanes of Belle Terre Parkway at about 11:30 p.m.
