Paul E. Swarts, 60, died and Pepper Rose Swarts, 12, was injured in a car crash on U.S. 1 south of Kankakee Trail in Palm Coast early the morning of Dec. 26. The Swarts are residents of Bunnell.

The fatal collision was the fourth fatal car crash along U.S. 1 in southern Flagler County since the beginning of December.

The crash occurred at 6:21 a.m. in the northbound lanes of U.S. 1 between Belle Terre Parkway and Kankakee Trail when Paul Swarts' white Ford Windstar van rear-ended a dump truck, according to Flagler County Sheriff's Office 911 dispatch notes.

Paul Swarts was unresponsive and did not have a pulse when Sheriff's Office deputies arrived.

Deputies performed CPR on him until Flagler County Fire Rescue paramedics arrived and took over, but he died at Florida Hospital Flagler.

Pepper Rose Swarts was taken to Halifax Health Medical Center with serious injuries, according to a Florida Highway Patrol news release.

The driver of the dump truck, 60-year-old Antonio Diaz, was not injured, according to the news release.

The crash came shortly after another serious crash on U.S. 1. The earlier crash occurred at about 4:29 a.m. at U.S. 1 and Seminole Woods Boulevard and involved a rollover with entrapment of a female driver. The woman was extricated from the vehicle and did not have serious injuries, according to dispatch notes.
