The driver who fled the scene of a motorcycle crash involving a Flagler County Sheriff's Office deputy has been identified, according to a news release by the Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies identified 74-year-old James Rex Voorhees, who is from South Carolina, as the driver who Bret Wood, a deputy on the motorcycle unit, tried to stop from fleeing the scene of a previous crash at State Road 100 and Interstate 95 on Wednesday, Nov. 22. Wood attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle, an older model white Buick Rendezvous with a South Carolina license plate, as it entered the on-ramp going south on I-95. Voorhees stopped abruptly, which caused Wood to lose control of his motorcycle and strike the pavement. Voorhees then fled the scene.
Wood suffered non-life threatening injuries.
FCSO contacted the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, the county where Voorhees is from, to request aid in locating Voorhees. Beaufort County was able to provide a driver’s license photograph, phone numbers and addresses on file. Voorhees was unable to be contacted at all phone numbers and addresses supplied.
After identifying Voorhees as the driver involved in the two crashes, it was discovered that Voorhees’ driver’s license had been suspended since July 2016.
An arrest affidavit was completed for Voorhees — who is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with injury, leaving the scene of an accident with property damage and driving with a suspended license with knowledge — and a warrant was signed for nationwide extradition for his arrest.
