An 18-year-old man sped away from a traffic stop the morning of July 18, crashed the car he was driving and then fled, according to a Flagler County Sheriff's Office charging affidavit.
It was the second time in fewer than two weeks that someone fled a Flagler County Sheriff's Office traffic stop and then crashed the vehicle they were driving. In the earlier incident, on July 5, the vehicle involved had been stolen and the 21-year-old suspect in that case has still not been caught.
The July 18 incident happened at about 9:46 a.m., when a deputy who was stopped at Fruitwood Avenue and Hickory Street on Daytona North saw a man he identified as 18-year-old Kyle Hackney driving a black Chevrolet Blazer, according to the charging affidavit.
The deputy knew Hackney didn't have a valid license and tried to stop the Blazer, but Hackney sped up.
He got onto Fir Street "at a high rate of speed" and then turned onto Walnut Street and Hickory Street, where he slowed down, according to the charging affidavit. The deputy tried to intersect the Blazer on Blueberrry Street at Clove Avenue, but Hackney "proceeded to travel at a high rate of speed in the opposite lane, toward my vehicle," forcing the deputy to pull off the roadway, according to the charging affidavit.
The Blazer barreled past a stop sign, skidded around a curve and landed in a ditch on Fruitwood Avenue just west of Blueberry Street.
A red Chevrolet Aveo driven by 35-year-old Justin Sheppard "stopped and quickly picked up (Hackney)," according to the report, and by the time the deputy caught up to the Blazer, Hackney was gone and the Aveo was heading down Fruitwood Avenue.
Hackney's mother arrived at the crash scene and spoke to the deputy, saying Hackney had a valid Ohio driver's license. His Florida one had been suspended for failure to pay a fine, according to the charging affidavit.
Deputies found and spoke to Sheppard, but not Hackney, who faces charges of reckless driving and fleeing and eluding, plus citations for failing to stop at a stop sign and driving on a suspended license without knowledge, according to the charging affidavit.
