A man driving drunk smashed his Ford Mustang into a telephone box and a neighbor’s mailbox Thursday evening, then sat in a chair in the homeowner’s driveway waiting for police to arrive but refused sobriety tests when they did.

Leonard Jankowski, 67, told deputies in slurred speech that he didn’t want to take standard sobriety tests because he feared they’d hurt his back. He also refused a breathalyzer test, according to a charging affidavit from the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.

But he’d waited at the scene of the crash because when he got in his car to leave, he wasn’t able to, he said, and when a deputy asked him to recite the alphabet, he missed the letter “f” and had to start over.

He consented to a blood test and tested over the legal limit for alcohol, according to the affidavit.

Jankowski, who lives on White Feather Lane in Palm Coast, has been charged with a DUI with property damage or personal injury.
