Chancey B. Dowling, of San Mateo, crossed the Flagler County line from St. Johns County before dawn Friday, Nov. 26. Dowling was involved in a car accident, but fled the scene, according to the Sheriff’s Office report. A Flagler County deputy followed the vehicle, which swerved in and out of the lanes.

The deputy noticed the rear left tire on the suspect’s vehicle was deflating, and then sparks erupted. Smoke billowed, prompting the deputy to increase his following distance. When the vehicle finally came to a stop, the deputy observed the suspect ingest a handful of pills. The deputy also found opened alcoholic beverages on the front seat.

Dowling was charged with fleeing/attempt to elude, driving under the influence and reckless driving.
Emergency medical services were requested because of the potential drug overdose, and Dowling was transported to the Flagler County Inmate Facility.
