What started out as a potential reckless driving charge quickly turned into false imprisonment and aggravated assault for a Palm Coast man, according to a charging affidavit released by the Flagler County Sheriff's Office.
A deputy spotted Gregory Greenway, 67, who has had previous encounters with law enforcement, driving recklessly on Cypress Point Parkway at 8 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The deputy turned on his lights and sirens, but Greenway accelerated and fled. Another deputy deployed stop sticks at I-95's exit 293 south bound off-ramp, but Greenway managed to avoid them.
Flagler County’s emergency helicopter, Fire Flight, was launched to assist deputies in tracking Greenway as he continued to flee. Law enforcement followed Greenway to his apartment complex at Porto Mar. Deputies attempted to make contact with Greenway but he would not respond to numerous commands to exit the apartment with his hands in view.
Greenway came to the window near the front door holding a golf club and told deputies that he would not exit the residence. In addition, deputies saw a female inside the residence with Greenway who was pleading with Greenway to let her leave the apartment. Greenway continued to refuse to let the woman leave for 15 minutes. He holding and shaking the golf club in an aggressive manner toward the woman, all while deputies could see the occurrence in full view through the window. Greenway then pinned the woman against the door out of view of the deputies. The deputies could overhear a physical altercation inside the apartment and used a master key to enter into the apartment to protect the victim from any harm.
Deputies attempted to secure Greenway in handcuffs, which he actively resisted. He was placed under arrest for fleeing and eluding, aggravated assault and false Imprisonment, among other charges. Greenway is currently on a six-month probation for a driving under the influence arrest that was reduced to reckless driving.
He was taken to the Flagler County Jail and is being held without bond.
“Numerous lives were put in jeopardy all because he knew he broke the law and was on probation and didn’t want to go to jail," Sheriff Rick Staly said in a release. "Our deputies did a great job spotting a dangerous driver, tactically observing him as he fled and apprehending him before he could hurt someone.”
