Being a sports agent is more than just business to Joe Mullins. It’s more than a source of income, and it’s more than being surrounded by famous athletes — it’s about the friendships.
“There’s so many people in this business who are just trying to take advantage of you,” Mullins said. “Anybody can manage [an athlete], but very few people can become close to them enough to trust, and it’s all about trust. These guys are putting their lives in your hands.”
Mullins, who moved to Flagler County in 2007, has been in the sports agency business since 1995 and is the owner of Mullins Sports and Entertainment. And on Aug. 5, he saw three of his clients inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Mullins sat in awe as he watched former Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor, former Denver Broncos running back Terrell Davis and former San Diego Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson walk across the stage at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio.
“That’s probably the most incredible feeling you can have as a friend to them,” Mullins said of the experience. “The Hall of Fame, it’s a beautiful moment.”
Hall of Fame running back and six-time Pro Bowler Eric Dickerson, who has worked with Mullins since 2001, said Mullins’ honest nature is what appealed to him the most.
“For me, being an ex-athlete, honesty is the most important thing because a lot of us have been taken by quick agents,” Dickerson said. “Joe says what he does and does what he says.”
Mullins has been through it all with his athletes. He’s seen them at their best — and at their worst. Regardless, Mullins always stays by their side.
“I’ve made sure I was with them as many times as possible,” Mullins said. “You live the highs and the lows with them. … You go through so much stuff together.”
