The Matanzas Woods Golf Course, vacant for years, finally has a new owner. Grand Haven Realty President Jim Cullis has purchased the property.

”We just signed a contract, and we’re in a study period. There are a lot of ideas,” he said. “We’re looking at it and trying to figure out what makes sense for everybody.”

The golf course, shut down since 2007, was once thought of as one of the region’s top designs.

After it closed down, various plans to renovate the course and reopen the fairways fell through.

It was purchased in 2011 by the Golf Group, along with two other local courses — the Pine Lakes Golf Course and the Cypress Knoll Golf Course — but the planned transformations at Matanzas Woods never happened, and the property is overgrown with weeds and looks abandoned. The other two courses remain open.
