The Matanzas High School boys and girls golf teams won their district tournaments for the second year in a row in October, according to coach Brandie Alred. Alexandra Gazzoli went on to earn the best local finish at the state level, taking third place.
First, Gazzoli won the district girls tournament with a 74. The second place golfer, Taylor Young, of Clay, shot an 87.
Other Matanzas girls who competed were Katherine Bentley (90), Betsy Baker (98), Cadence Lasher (106) and Emma Markese (115).
The girls then finished 10th in the state on Oct. 27-28. Gazzoli scored a 76 and then a 74, 10 strokes behind the state champions.
Bentley finished 54th in the state with a 94-91-150 score. Lasher was 68th with 98-98-196; Baker was 85th with 108-113-221; and Markese was 87th with 117-107-224.
Matanzas boys were led in the district tournament by Marcos Defeo, with a 78; he finished third in the individual tournament. Ashtin Arlaud was one stroke behind him at 79, to finish fourth. (The overall winner was Chase Carroll, of Middleburg, with a 72.)
Others who competed for Matanzas were Alek Libby (85), Jake Vannucci (94) and Matthew Santilli (96)
Flagler Palm Coast High School’s girls golf team finished 12th in the state at the FHSAA state championship Oct. 30-31, at Las Colinas. Kate Parsons was the top finisher for the team, shooting 82-80-162, for 40th place. Caroline Rizzo was tied for 56th, Carmella Carlisi 58th, Lauren Holmgreen 71st and Emma Tice 76th.
Elijah Riecks had the top local finish in the Class 3A District 3 tournament Oct. 12, at The Golf Club at Cypress Head, shooting an 86, good for 22nd in the district. Andrew Machando shot a 105, Brayden Stuart 109 and Isaac Trawick 112.
