Matanzas still advances to the state playoffs for the first time.

Despite a stellar pitching performance by Matanzas junior Amber Johnson, the Lady Pirates fell short to Ponte Vedra Thursday night in the District 4-5A championship, losing 3-0.

A few errors on defense by the Lady Pirates in the bottom of the second inning led to two Ponte Vedra runs. That was all the Lady Sharks needed, although they added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to pad the lead.

Johnson started in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Pirates and allowed just four hits in six innings. She struck out one batter and walked one.

Matanzas coach Sara Novak was enthusiastic about Johnson’s performance, noting Ponte Vedra is a good offensive team.

Juniors Gabrielle Prickett and Marisa Magnuson both went 1-for-3 with a single.

After the game, Novak told her team she was proud of their effort.

“I always try to end on the positive,” Novak said. “This team has made history at Matanzas, being district runners-up in softball. And the best part is, our season continues, and we can show people how we play in the regional tournament next week.”

Despite the loss, Matanzas (12-13) will advance to the Class 5A state playoffs for the first time. In the few days leading up to regionals, Novak said the team will continue to work on timely hitting and bunting, as well as infield and outfield skills.

“I want the team to not feel pressure — keep the game simple, have fun and play the game they know how to and succeed,” Novak said.

The Lady Pirates will play at Baker County High School 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 25. According to www.MaxPreps.com, Baker County went undefeated in District 3-5A play.
