LAKELAND — Flagler Palm Coast’s Jake Kosachiner and Matanzas’ Clayton Dennis had two completely different routes over the weekend at the two-day state wrestling tournament. But both wrestled their way into the top six: Kosachiner finished third, Dennis finished sixth.

After falling in the opening round, Kosachiner (41-6) won five straight matches, all by decisions, to finish as the No. 3 wrestler in the Class 3A 113-pound weight class.

Dennis had the opposite result, winning his first two matches on Friday in the Class 2A 170-pound weight class. Both of those matches, which he won with pins, put him into the semifinals. Dennis lost to undefeated Dontae McGee (58-0), who ultimately won the state title.

Dennis (41-11) then lost a close 9-8 decision in the consolation semifinals and a 9-5 decision in the fifth-place match.

Other area wrestlers finished as follows:
Alfred Shavers (120 pounds, FPC) lost in the consolation quarterfinals. He finished 41-6.

Kaz Maia (132 pounds, FPC) lost in the second round of wrestle-backs. He finished 39-7.

Justin Boyle (160 pounds, FPC) lost in the second round of wrestle-backs. He finished 40-10.

Jonathan Muniz (195 pounds, FPC) lost in the second round of wrestle-backs. He finished 40-10.

Jordin Castanheira (182 pounds, Matanzas) lost in the first round of wrestle-backs. He finished 19-18.

Live updates from the weekend.
