Within the last three weeks I have become a regular at Kawa Sushi. They know where I sit, what I order (except for the sushi rolls, which I like to switch up) and even my name. I feel a bit like Norm walking into Cheers! This is better than any fast food place in both customer service and healthy eating.

So I take my usual seat, say hello to the waitress, and order my scrumptious lunch. The first thing to arrive on the table after my ice water is the delightful amuse-bouche, which literally means “mouth amuser.” This little taster of an appetizer is krab, cream cheese and jalapeños — all tempura-fried to perfection. It’s small, so I allow myself to delight in the fried, gooey goodness of it all. It’s hot, cheesy, and the kick of the jalapeño mixed with the krab meat creates a savory amusement for the taste buds.

Next comes the soup and salad. I’ve had miso soup in many sushi restaurants, but none with such a complex weaving of textures. It has creamy slivers of tofu and delicate strands of seaweed, all infused with a clear, slightly salty broth. The salad is nothing special but knowing the next course is on its way, I allow the ginger dressing, crunchy lettuce and cucumber to hold me over until I can relish in the main course.

My main course of two artfully crafted sushi rolls arrives in all its Japanese splendor. The fresh fish, vegetables and wasabi formulate the exotic and ultra-fresh sushi roll. The two rolls I choose are the salmon and avocado roll, and the white tuna roll. Both are created while I watch.

This place makes my day, as I can slip away from work and enjoy an affordable, healthy, and tasty lunch all under $8. Give Kawa Sushi a try. I’ll probably see you there!
