A 64-year-old Palm Coast man who died in a motorcycle crash on Belle Terre Parkway at Ponce de Leon Drive on Oct. 5 has been identified as Flagler Schools bus driver James Egan.

Egan began working with the school district in 2015 and drove the bus known as the Bat bus, which ran to Matanzas High and Belle Terre Elementary, according to a district spokesman.

It was not clear to Florida Highway Patrol investigators as of their initial report whether Egan's motorcycle had overturned as Egan reacted to a crash ahead of him, or whether the motorcycle itself had been struck.

The crash occurred at about 5:29 p.m. when an SUV driven by a 75-year-old Palm Coast man entered a northbound lane of Belle Terre Parkway from the intersection and was struck by a northbound SUV driven by a 25-year-old Palm Coast man, who had minor injuries after his vehicle spun and overturned, coming to rest in a ditch on the east side of the parkway north of the intersection.

Egan's motorcycle had been traveling next to the 25-year-old’s SUV when the crash occurred. Egan was thrown onto a paved median as the motorcycle overturned.

The other SUV’s 75-year-old driver and his 73-year-old passenger were not injured.
