Isaias remains a tropical storm, continues heading up the coast

Residents should expect to see the storm's initial impacts later today.

Isaias has remained a tropical storm overnight, despite being forecast to restrengthen into a hurricane, and residents in Volusia and Flagler County should expect to start seeing the storm's impact later this afternoon. Sunday, Aug. 2.

The National Hurricane Center's 11 a.m. advisory reports that Tropical Storm Isaias is moving at around 8 mph toward the north-northwest, with a northeast turn on Monday and Tuesday. The center of Isaias will move near the east coast of Florida overnight.

Isaias has maximum sustained winds of 65 mph, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 115 miles from its center, NHC reported.

Four shelters, including two for the special needs population, opened this morning in the west side of Volusia County, which issued a voluntary evacuation order for the barrier island and residents living in mobile homes near the coast. The order is meant for residents who don't feel comfortable riding out the storm in their home, though Volusia officials advised residents shelter in place if possible due to the current pandemic.

Flagler County Emergency Management reported that while the tropical storm warning remains in effect for the coast, the warning for the inland locations have been canceled. About 2-4 inches of rain is expected.
