Indian Trails Middle School has been selected as one of the top 12 finalists in Samsung’s nationwide Solve for Tomorrow video contest and has won $70,000 in technology for its new STEM lab, compliments of Samsung, Microsoft, DIRECTV and the Adobe Foundation.

Earlier in the year, 25 schools were each awarded a video camcorder, Adobe photo/video editing software, and a computer, and were challenged to create a video on the effects of STEM in improving the environment and the community.

Dana Hausen’s life science and service-learning classrooms stepped up to the challenge by creating a video that demonstrates how origami can be used to address paper recycling at their school and aid homelessness in Flagler County.

The school is now in the running to be selected as a grand prize winner for a package of $100,000.
Contest judging began Feb. 6 and will end March 12. The Samsung judging panel will pick four schools, and the public will pick one winner through online voting at the Solve for Tomorrow webpage www.samsung.com/solvefortomorrow and on the Samsung USA Facebook page.

Winners will be notified on or about March 15. As part of the prize package, up to four people from each of the winning schools will be flown to Washington, D.C., during the week of April 16 to participate in the Solve for Tomorrow Awards Ceremony.

In addition to the contest, seventh- and eighth-graders at Indian Trails are collecting donations for the Sonobe House of Hope for the Homeless. Donation drop off is located in the front lobby of the school. Service-learning students are also working closely with Dr. Pamela Jackson-Smith, homeless education coordinator of Flagler County Schools, who will connect the supplies and monies collected to families in need.
