Soccer enthusiasts will come in droves to Palm Coast in the coming weeks and months, as city officials announced the Indian Trails Sports Complex has been awarded to host two of the state’s top soccer tournaments.

The Regional Cup Committee for the Florida Youth Soccer Association awarded Palm Coast with the Round of 16 for the Region B Cup, which will take place Feb. 25 and Feb. 26. The tournament will be for the U11 and U12 girls divisions and will feature 32 teams.

Also, the State Committee for the FYSA selected Indian Trails Sports Complex has the host site for the Round of 16 in the State Cup tournament for U15 to U18 girls, which will take place April 28 and April 29. State cup is the highest level of youth club soccer. Teams from all over the state compete in State Cup.

Hundreds, possibly thousands, of players, parents, coaches and family members will visit Palm Coast because of both tournaments. These two tournaments are the highest level of soccer in Florida. The state cup essentially determines the best club soccer team in Florida.

Until this year, most of these tournaments are held at larger cities throughout the state.

Reg Monsanto, president of FC United Soccer, said the city is honored to be awarded with the tournaments. Monsanto also works in the city’s IT department.

“Being the host city for these events can be attributed to the strong partnership between the city of Palm Coast and FC United, and to the amenities available here to players.

There will be six teams from FC United playing in the tournament later this month. Those teams are as follows:

U12 boys: went undefeated in group play, scoring 22 goals and allowing four.
U14 boys: went 2-1 in group play.
U11 girls: went 1-1-1 in group play.
U12 girls: went 1-1-1 in group play.
U13 girls: went 2-1 in group play.
U15 girls: skipped group play to go straight to Round of 16.

The Palm Coast City Council added four more fields to the sports complex last year — an effort many officials hoped would help lure some of the state’s top soccer and lacrosse tournaments to town. Palm Coast was awarded a $150,000 grant by Flagler’s Tourist Development Council to increase the number of fields. Most of the work was done by city crews.

So far, the plan has worked.

City Manager Jim Landon announced the selection of Palm Coast at Tuesday’s City Council meeting.

“Both of those are directly related to the facilities we have here and our efforts to bring in those visitors,” Landon said.
