They speak softly, but they know what they want – successful careers in a science or math field. They are in the seventh grade.

Jayla Alton and Ashley Andrews have been selected to attend the week-long University Women Tech Trek STEM Camp at Palm Beach State College in Boca Raton, Florida.

“Our science teacher, Mr. (Paul) D'Agostino nominated us,” Ashley said. “We were both in his class for agricultural science. He nominated us, and then the school nominated us, and they accepted us.”

The acceptance process also required each girl to fill out an application form, write an essay, and be interviewed by a panel of Flagler AAUW members.

AAUW Susan Baird said the process begins with the group approaching the middle schools to encourage their teachers to nominate female students.

“The nominee's names are sent to the State (AAUW) Coordinator and applications are sent out,” Baird said. “They they have to write an essay.”

A three-member panel interviewed the girls at the Flagler County Public Library. They also verify with the parents, that they are

comfortable with their daughters going away for a week.

This year there were five applicants from Indian Trails Middle School.

“There were 180 applications state-wide for 60 spots,” Baird said.

Both girls are understandably excited about getting to attend the camp. The cost is $1,000 per girl, of which the AAUW pays $950.

“I am looking forward to math, and science, and technology for one week,” Jayla said. “I am looking forward to meeting and talking with the other girls.”

The camp is from June 12 to 18. During that time, the girls will live in dorms on campus, attend core classes, participate in hands-on workshops, take field trips and attend a professional women's night.

“I feel it's going to be a good experience, and fun to go and see the successful women,” Ashley said. “And get the feel of a dorm and a college.”

Jayla has plans to become a surgeon, while Ashley, also considering becoming a doctor, hasn't decided which career.

“A lot of different careers from the STEM category interest me,” Ashley said.

Ashley has lived in Flagler most of her life, while Jayla has lived throughout the United States This is her first year in Palm Coast and she likes it.

“This has a more advanced academic STEM,” Jayla said.
