The Matanzas volleyball team took second place over the weekend at the Seabreeze volleyball tournament.
The Lady Pirates lost to Seabreeze and New Smyrna Beach — two of the area’s top teams — during morning pool play. But Matanzas responded in the afternoon, defeating Mainland and Deltona, to advance to the finals against New Smyrna Beach, where they lost in two games: 25-12 and 25-13.
After finishing sixth last season, Matanzas finished second this year.
“(This year) was a much better showing, and we were down one of our middle hitters because of another sports commitment,” coach Julie Menendez said.
Jillian Bontempo had 13 kills and four of the team’s five blocks in the tournament. Morgan Lambert added seven kills and 54 digs. Jessica Malmsten had eight kills and 25 assists. Andrea Menendez had 47 digs, Gabbi Paiz had 11 kills, one block and 45 digs, and Monica Lao had 22 digs.
As a team, Matanzas had 49 kills, five blocks, 4 assists and 210 digs throughout the 10 matches.
Palm Coast to host four sports in this year’s Senior Games
For the first time ever, the city of Palm Coast will host four sports events in partnership with the Ormond Beach Senior Games: archery, dance, horseshoes and powerlifting.
The Seniors Games are open to men and women ages 50 and up, and this year’s games will run Oct. 26 to Nov. 2.
Registration is $10 and includes a T-shirt, Opening Ceremony admission (Oct. 25), and participation in one sports event. Participation in each additional sports event is $5. The deadline to register is Oct. 7.

Events hosted by Palm Coast are as follows:
Archery – 900 American Round: 8 a.m. Oct. 26, at Central Park at Town Center, 975 Central Ave., Palm Coast. Additional competition equipment fee of $5 must be paid at time of event.
Dance (four events: cha cha, waltz, East Coast swing, rumba): 6 p.m. Oct. 30, at Flagler Auditorium, 5500 E. State Road 100, Palm Coast.
Horseshoes (singles): 9 a.m. Oct. 31, at Old Dixie Community Park, 1250 S. Dixie Highway, Bunnell.
Powerlifting (bench press, squat, deadlift): 8 a.m. Nov. 2, at Matanzas High School, 3535 Old Kings Road N., Palm Coast.
Opening Ceremony will be noon Oct. 25, at the Ormond Beach Senior Center, 351 Andrews St., in Ormond Beach.
The Florida Sports Foundation sanctions the Ormond Beach Senior Games and other local games in Florida each year. The local games event may serve as a qualifier for the state championships or national championships. Qualifying criteria varies for each event.
Events may also be held locally that are not part of the state- or national-level competition.
