Hypothetical discussion leads to shooting

A Palm Coast man got a bit too demonstrative Wednesday when a drinking buddy asked him what he’d do if he was attacked, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office: He pulled out a gun, pointed it at his friend’s stomach and pulled the trigger.

The victim survived the shooting, deputies said. They're not sure about the friendship.

Deputies arrived at the home at 4721 E. State Road 100 in Bunnell at about 6 p.m. Wednesday and found Jamie Goodell, 44, covered in blood and lying on the ground.

His friend Edward Neveony Towers — the man with the gun — initially told deputies he didn’t know what had happened.

"They had been drinking in the garage, and he kind of denied it," said Flagler County Sheriff's Office  spokesman Bob Weber. "It sounds as though it was accidental."

Another man in the house, Lucas Skeans, told deputies he was in the house during the shooting and gave Goodell first aid. When Towers asked him to check the gun to make sure it was empty, he said, another round went  off.

The firearm was a 9 mm Diamondback Arms handgun Towers carried in a belt holster, according to a news release. Towers has a concealed carry permit.

Towers has been charged with culpable negligence and discharging a firearm in public. He was taken to the Flagler County Inmate Facility and released on $1,500 bond. He hasn't been charged with more serious offenses because deputies believe the shooting wasn't intentional, Weber said.

Goodell was taken to Halifax Hospital and was in stable condition going into surgery.
