Government Services Building security guard Larry Belfort was honored with the Chairman’s Award Monday, Nov. 21, by the Flagler County Board of County Commissioners.

Created last year by Commissioner George Hanns, the Chairman’s Award has no schedule for recognizing its recipients. It’s an honor given to any resident, staff member or organization exclusively at the county commission chairman’s discretion for, as then-chairman Alan Peterson put it, going “clearly above and beyond what is reasonably expected.”

In 2010, the recognition was given to two residents for their dedication in attending county government meetings.

Before naming this year’s recipient, Peterson noted that the award is especially unusual because it will not be given to a Flagler resident.

He called Government Services Building lobby guard Larry Belfort to the podium — “For outstanding customer service, and always being helpful, cheerful and friendly to the residents of Flagler County,” Peterson said.

Belfort was given a standing ovation from all in board chambers.

When asked to speak, Belfort smiled. “I talk enough during the day, so that’s all right. I’ll be quiet now,” he said.

Belfort has worked in the GSB since August 2010, and is a United States Air Force veteran.
